Whether you're thinking of acquiring your first dairy goats or are the owner of a commercial dairy, let ADGA help provide the resources you need to be successful.
BEFORE YOU BUY...DO YOUR HOME WORK !!!!
So you are interested in getting a dairy goat or two ?
As with any other animal, each breed has its own personality. It is a good idea see some goats and talk to goat owners/breeders before you take the leap into ownership. This also will give you chance to find out what ELSE is involved in owning goats. (feeding , fencing, protection from predators, etc)
MOST importantly, you need to make sure you get HEALTHY animals to start with. So for example, buying goats at a sale barn is probably not a great way to start your herd. Two diseases that are important for you to avoid purchasing with you animals are:
1 - Caprine Arthriitis and Encepahalitis (CAE) (click to see detailed information)
2 - Caseous Lymphadenitis (click to see information)
Ask to SEE records of blood tests for CAE. If you see sickly animals at a farm or any type of abscesses/scars from abscesses, think twice...You may be taking home more than you counted on.
